This FoodWatch app, how does it work?
Here you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions to quickly get the right information.
How does FoodWatch help me reducing waste?
FoodWatch sends notifications about nearly expired products so you can use them in time. This way, you consume food you might otherwise have had to throw away and buy again. This saves you money annually, which you can then spend on other goals.
Can I create a shopping list within this app?
Yes, you can easily create a shopping list to prevent unnecessary purchases. First, check how many of the product you have in My Inventory, and then simply add it. Loaded the product at the supermarket? Then you can cross it off.
How much does it cost to use FoodWatch?
FoodWatch is completely free. No purchases, no registration, no ads, and no data sharing. That’s your first saving!
What permissions does the app ask for?
To use FoodWatch optimally, you will be asked to allow use of the camera and notifications.
Is my data stored securely?
Absolutely, your data is only stored locally on your phone. You are in control of your data. Photos you take of products are only used in the app on your phone and are not shared.
Is FoodWatch suitable for every household?
The app is designed for every type of household, large or small. So whether you have a lot or a few (edible) products in your home (fridge, freezer, pantry, drawers), FoodWatch helps you keep track of your inventory.
Which devices support the FoodWatch app?
The app works on smartphones running the Android operating system from Android 7.0 onwards. An Apple iOS app is in development.
Can I change when I receive notifications?
Yes, you can customize notifications to your preferences: how many days before the expiration date, and the notification time. You can do this in Settings.
Where can I change the language?
The first time you use the app, you’ll be asked to select a language. Want to change the language? Go to Settings -> Language.
Does ‘My Stock’ only track (perishable) products with a date?
No; you can also add products without a date, optionally via the barcode scanner. These products (e.g., hairspray, laundry detergent, garbage bags) are included in the stock and displayed separately. This way, you maintain an overview of all your products!
How does the barcode scanner work?
To add products using a barcode, you must have given FoodWatch permission to use your camera. Then, click the “Barcode” button and point the camera at the barcode. If the barcode is recognized, the product name and brand will be automatically filled in, along with an image if available.
